Troubled and Mixed Beauty: On the Impurity of Aesthetic Experience
Biased by desire, incompatible with utility, and inaccessible to morality, the feeling of beauty would exist only as pure, that is, untainted by the interests that structure other areas of human existence. What disturbs beauty would therefore only degrade it. In contrast to this omnipresent presupposition in philosophical tradition, the eight texts that make up this issue acknowledge the fundamentally mixed nature of experiences that, irreducible to contemplation, fully engage the sense of beauty by developing new ways of relating to the sensible. By challenging the dogma of purity and placing beauty at the heart of our daily concerns, the disturbances that assail beauty from its exterior allow for new conceptual figures to emerge in the field of aesthetics: the fan, the supporter, the player, the reveler... Instead of lamenting the degradation of beauty, should we not consider the possibility of its enrichment?
